Wild Yibang Dahei Shan is a small, lesser-known tea area in Mengla county, Xishuangbanna, where only a handful of families continue producing this wild, heirloom tea. Accessing material like this took us years of building relationships with tea producers in Yunnan. Such material almost never reaches the open market. Harvested between late March and late April, the tea grows at 1,600–1,900 meters in a mountain environment receiving around 12 hours of daylight during the growing season. The slightly acidic, mineral-rich soils, naturally containing elements such as iron and zinc, create the conditions for slow, steady leaf development and give this small area its own distinct expression.

The garden grows in weathered rocky soil, where broken stone and earth provide excellent drainage and airflow. The raw material comes from Yibang's local heirloom zhongxiao ye zhong 中小葉種 (medium-to-small-leaf tea population), a wild native population well adapted to these conditions. Rather than being known for a famous name, this tea quietly reflects the character of its origin.

The mouthfeel is sticky and high-toned, gradually becoming silky through the session. Early infusions show a delicate salty note with a light minty freshness before giving way to lifted yet restrained aromatics, more sweetness than sourness, and a long huigan 回甘 (sweet aftertaste). We prefer brewing it with short gongfu infusions to appreciate how it develops from one brew to the next.

    FAQ

What is included in the 2026 Yancha Course?

The 2026 Yancha Course includes four two-hour online sessions led by Pink and Nadi in spring 2026. Registration automatically includes the Complete Yancha series, featuring seven distinct micro-terroirs. You will learn a structured framework for understanding and evaluating Wuyi Yancha using terminology and evaluation logic practiced in Fujian under Chinese national standards.

Who is this Wuyi Yancha course designed for?

This course is designed for serious tea drinkers who wish to move beyond descriptive tasting to develop a structured framework for evaluating Wuyi Yancha. You will learn terminology and evaluation logic practiced in Fujian. The Complete Yancha series box is included in the tuition fee, making it the ideal opportunity to deepen your understanding of complex Zhengyan wulong.

What exactly will we learn during the online sessions?

We cover the history and terroir of Wuyi Shan, the classification system, and core concepts like Yan Yun and the legacy of Da Hong Pao. We also dive into evaluating key cultivars like Rou Gui and Shui Xian using Chinese national standards, and discuss the critical role of resting and storage in high-end yancha.

Do I need special teaware for the guided tastings?

We highly recommend using a standard competition gaiwan to match the grading format used in Fujian tea competitions. This allows for accurate, objective evaluation during the sessions. As a bonus, the first five participants to enroll in the course will receive a professional competition gaiwan completely free.

How and when is the yancha selection box shipped?

The Complete Yancha Box is shipped directly from our hyt warehouse in Xiamen, China, well in advance of the spring sessions. You have the option to upgrade your shipping to FedEx for faster, direct delivery all the way to your door.

Is there a discount for hyt Blind Tasting Club members or past course participants?

Yes, we offer an exclusive discount for active members of our online Blind Tasting Club, as well as participants who have joined our previous courses. If you are currently a member of the BTC or a past student, please contact us directly before registering to receive your special enrollment rate for the course and selection box.

Can I buy the Complete Yancha Series without taking the course?

The course and the selection box are designed to complement each other perfectly, providing both the reference material and the educational framework. However, the limited edition box is also available on its own for collectors who wish to explore these seven rare micro-terroirs independently.
