We came to this tea through a third-generation Bai minority (白族) family in Fengqing who have been making tea on their own mountains for decades. From cultivation to processing, they keep every step of craftsmanship and production within the family. The family manages extensive forest land with hundreds of wild, uncultivated tea trees, although this tea itself comes from cultivated ancient trees. Better known for reds like Dian Hong and Shai Hong, they only began making bai cha 白茶 (white tea) from their highest-altitude ancient tea trees a few years ago. We call this tea Gao Shan 高山 (high mountain), a term borrowed from Taiwanese wulong, because these trees grow at around 2,300 meters above sea level.

We reserved this 2026 batch a year in advance. It grows in Fengqing district in Lincang from cultivated gushu 古樹 (ancient trees), many of them over 300 years old. Picked in late March, it is simply shade-dried after harvest. This entire harvest is normally pressed into white tea cakes. That's why we asked the family to reserve part of it for us as loose leaves.

Unlike many Yunnan white teas, this one opens with a refined floral aroma that reminds us of an early first flush Darjeeling, while still keeping the sweetness and inner depth we expect from a Yunnan white. The compressed version has become Pink's parents' everyday morning tea, accompanying them daily to their dim sum restaurant in Hong Kong. We recommend this tea to drinkers who want to experience another side of Yunnan bai cha. Actually, we recommend it to everyone. This is a truly affordable gem.

    FAQ

What is included in the 2026 Yancha Course?

The 2026 Yancha Course includes four two-hour online sessions led by Pink and Nadi in spring 2026. Registration automatically includes the Complete Yancha series, featuring seven distinct micro-terroirs. You will learn a structured framework for understanding and evaluating Wuyi Yancha using terminology and evaluation logic practiced in Fujian under Chinese national standards.

Who is this Wuyi Yancha course designed for?

This course is designed for serious tea drinkers who wish to move beyond descriptive tasting to develop a structured framework for evaluating Wuyi Yancha. You will learn terminology and evaluation logic practiced in Fujian. The Complete Yancha series box is included in the tuition fee, making it the ideal opportunity to deepen your understanding of complex Zhengyan wulong.

What exactly will we learn during the online sessions?

We cover the history and terroir of Wuyi Shan, the classification system, and core concepts like Yan Yun and the legacy of Da Hong Pao. We also dive into evaluating key cultivars like Rou Gui and Shui Xian using Chinese national standards, and discuss the critical role of resting and storage in high-end yancha.

Do I need special teaware for the guided tastings?

We highly recommend using a standard competition gaiwan to match the grading format used in Fujian tea competitions. This allows for accurate, objective evaluation during the sessions. As a bonus, the first five participants to enroll in the course will receive a professional competition gaiwan completely free.

How and when is the yancha selection box shipped?

The Complete Yancha Box is shipped directly from our hyt warehouse in Xiamen, China, well in advance of the spring sessions. You have the option to upgrade your shipping to FedEx for faster, direct delivery all the way to your door.

Is there a discount for hyt Blind Tasting Club members or past course participants?

Yes, we offer an exclusive discount for active members of our online Blind Tasting Club, as well as participants who have joined our previous courses. If you are currently a member of the BTC or a past student, please contact us directly before registering to receive your special enrollment rate for the course and selection box.

Can I buy the Complete Yancha Series without taking the course?

The course and the selection box are designed to complement each other perfectly, providing both the reference material and the educational framework. However, the limited edition box is also available on its own for collectors who wish to explore these seven rare micro-terroirs independently.
